Educator


Stephen Martin has been involved in music education since 1994. He currently teaches at Brigham Young University as percussion adjunct faculty. Responsibilities include teaching percussion techniques, applied lessons, and assisting with the drumline. Dr. Martin has held similar positions at William Jewell College, Huston-Tillotson University, and Southwestern University. In addition to collegiate teaching, Dr. Martin was an Assistant Band Director at Liberty North High School (Liberty, MO), West Ridge Middle School (Austin, TX), and Heritage High School (Saginaw MI). He did his student teaching at Heritage, where his responsibilities included teaching the Concert Band, and guitar class, as well as assisting the Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, Percussion Ensemble, and instructing the marching percussion section. During that time, Dr. Martin also taught music at the Benito Jaurez Academy in Saginaw.

Dr. Martin earned the degree of Bachelor of Music Education from Central Michigan University, and the Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from the University of Texas at Austin. He has taught and performed at the Alma College Percussion Workshop from 2003 to 2012. He has given clinics and masterclasses at the University of Western Ontario, Brigham Young University-Idaho, and various public schools in Charlevoix, Michigan and Long Island, New York.

Dr. Martin has been teaching privately since 1994, totaling 85 students ranging in age from 9 to 50. He has also instructed numerous college and high school drumlines including, in Michigan: Central Michigan University, Petoskey HS, Sparta HS, Addison HS, Forest Hills East HS, Mt. Pleasant HS, Walled Lake Western HS, Anchor Bay HS, Heritage HS, Flushing HS, and Ogemaw Heights HS; and outside of Michigan: Brigham Young University, William Jewell College, and Stephen F. Austin HS.
